Adrian Trent leaned against the wall of Cherry Ink and watched the Midnighters stroll their way down M Street. A few tumbled out of Birreria Paradiso, the pizzeria joint across from the shop, closing it down for the night, their loud bawdy laughter filling the air. Some dashed down the street to Clyde’s to continue the Friday night drinking with only an hour until closing. Out of the masses taking the midnight walk, two women stopped in front of the shop, they glanced at him quickly then giggled before going inside.

Diego pulled Daphne closer to him, snuggling her ass against his groin. They were sitting on a heavily padded quilt he’d brought out for the bonfire. She was between his legs outstretched legs, her back pressed against his chest. The Alpha and Luna were next to them sitting in a similar position. All around them humans and wolves danced around, chasing after one another.

“Are you sure this isn’t some hippie commune?” Ryder asked looking over at them.

“I know, right,” Daphne chuckled, the soft vibration seeping into him.

Damn it felt fucking good to finally get her right where he needed her. No more chasing. No more looks of distrust—for the most part.

“Are they always like this?” Daphne asked her cousin as they watched Ryder chase after Diego. Even in his cowboys boots he was quicker than the woman, but not by much. She reminded Daphne of the young pups after their first shift. The excitement and adrenaline coursing through their veins. The endorphin high that increased speed and endurance. It couldn’t be much different for a human turned shifter.

Gideon looked at her and shrugged. “Yeah. She misses her brothers even though she won’t admit it and Diego ended up being a good surrogate. He loves playing along. Probably because he’s an only child.”

“That must make life here—entertaining.”

“Yep,” he snorted.

As she tucked herself in for the night she couldn’t help but feel a sense of accomplishment. Five miles down a treacherous path and it had been smooth sailing. Tomorrow would bring the serpentine course westward across the broad, cacti-studded Tonto Plateau. She’d walk the brink of cliffs that plunged more than a thousand feet to the Colorado River. The plan was to hike another five miles until she got to Grapevine Creek. There she would set up camp next to the river and let them lull her to sleep.

While she may be closer in age to Nathan, him being only two years older as opposed to Jon’s three years younger; they had never really been close. He and Cameron treated her like she was a pest. They ditched her every opportunity they could. When Jonathan came into the world Ryder had been thrilled. She was disappointed that he wasn’t a girl but that didn’t stop her from making him play with her when he got out of that icky baby stage. She was pretty sure there was a picture of a two-year old Jonathan in a dress with make-up on done lovingly by five year old Ryder, that their mom was holding onto to humiliate him in front of a girl he got serious with. The serious girlfriend had yet to happen but her mother held out hope.
