Prologue
Fear wasn?t a word ever associated with the Master Gargoyles, creations of the Council of Twelve Wizards of King Kadmos and protectors of the Kingdom of Halstrid. However, a bitter taste of the unfamiliar emotion filled Master Steinn?s mouth as he flew swiftly toward the wizard Gregori?s castle. It was the closest stronghold of an ally and as luck would have it, Zephara was in residence. Steinn looked down at her unconscious twin Zephyr, whom he carried in his arms, and fear tightened his chest.
Though unconscious, Zephyr?s inner strength remained apparent by how quickly the minor wounds were healing. It was a large head wound that worried Stein the most. He eyed Gregori?s home and dropped from the sky to land in the courtyard. Night had already fallen and the wizard used magic as protection, so the courtyard stood empty. Should he knock? Call out to his brother who was also inside the stone walls?
Another glance at the naked, bruised and bleeding man in his arms froze him on the threshold. There was nothing he could say, no explanation he was willing to give about Zeph?s state of undress, and his own disheveled clothing. Vengeance called to him from where their attackers remained in the woods. No, he wouldn?t dally here even long enough to speak to his brother.
He knelt at the doorstep and laid Zeph on the cold stone as gently as possible, taking great care to pull a cloak tightly about him. The still lips called to him, but shame and that awful sensation fear held him back. Instead he cupped Zephyr?s cheek in one palm and brushed his thumb over
the those tempting lips.
?Be well, my friend. I will find our attackers and make them pay.?
Silver lashes fluttered and Zeph?s lids lifted enough for a crescent of his silver eyes to be revealed. ?Sssstein??
The whispered hiss of his name shot a pang of regret through his gut, but he had to leave.
?I must go,? he whispered back. ?Call to your sister. She is within.?
Steinn stood and tore his gaze away from the man at his feet, then leapt into the air before Zeph?s draw could further consume him. He had a job to do. The royal ambassador of a foreign country had been attacked within the realm. It was his job to find those responsible and mete out justice. Anger boiled his blood at the thought of Zeph?s injuries. Though he didn?t find joy in hurting others, this time he longed to break bones and spill blood.

Missy Jane is the alter ego of a married mother of four who was born and raised in Texas. When not writing, she spends her time reading, taking photos of her children, and training her husband to believe she’s always right.
